Students and staff from the Neerim South, Noojee, Neerim District Rural and Jindivick primary schools recently participated a day’s sailing on Westernport Bay, as part of the Kids Come Sail program sponsored by Neerim District Community Bank® Branch.
Before embarking all participants were briefed on safety at sea. They were also told the history of the yacht and details of its trip sailing from America to Australia.
All children were given the opportunity to skipper the yacht and be involved in crew duties including raising and lowering the sails.
They had firsthand experience of the importance of 'weather watching' as an imminent storm necessitated a sudden change of course and much excitement arose as the yacht heeled.
The students sincerely thank the Community Bank® branch for this unique learning experience that was greatly appreciated and will always be remembered by those involved.
