The Bendigo Centre
Construction on Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s new headquarters, The Bendigo Centre, started on 2 September 2005. After three years and three months of construction, more than 113 kilometres of cabling for lighting and power, 2100 cubic metres of concrete and 380 tonnes of steel, the building was officially opened in Bendigo by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Thursday 11 December 2008.
Bendigo Bank is the only Australian bank to position its head office outside of a capital city, and The Bendigo Centre is one of the first Five Star Green Star designed buildings to be built in a regional city.
The Bendigo Centre comprises two buildings - the existing Fountain Court and the new Bendigo Centre building linked by a glass-walled skywalk. The complex includes two new open-air lanes (Laity Lane and Perrow Walk) which connect Bath Lane and High Street, a new piazza (Lyric Square) and a boardwalk (Oscars Walk) which is a pedestrian link along the Bendigo Creek.
The $100 million, six-storey office building accommodates almost 1000 staff and is a landmark redevelopment in the city centre. It incorporates new retail stores, cafes and restaurants.
Key features of The Bendigo Centre include;
- The building uses half the energy of a typical office building.
- Potable water used will be reduced by more than 50 per cent.
- Recycling Water Treatment Plant saves 20,000 litres of waste water a day.
- The building incorporates one of the first large-scale applications of under-floor displacement air conditioning in Australia. This system provides fresh, clean air at a low pressure with individual vent controls at every work station. It uses considerably less energy than a traditional system.
- Solar panels reduce the amount of black power used.
- Automated lights dim or turn off when there is sufficient natural light.
