Bushfire recovery grants have hit the ground in South Australia

3 June 2021

More than $400,000 is making a difference to bushfire affected communities from Kangaroo Island to the Adelaide Hills. This is thanks to you supporting the Bendigo Bank’s South Australian Bushfire Appeal.

The following projects have a focus on the short-term recovery. The funds will support the resilience, rebuilding and strengthening of the communities.

Rebuilding through regenerative agriculture

During the winter months, National Association for Sustainable Agriculture will conduct a series of seminars. Their goal is to bring leading experts to assist the Adelaide Hills farmers with their recovery journey. They'll share their knowledge on rebuilding properties, restoring and sustaining plants, animals and people. They will help local farmers develop strategies that build a more resilient landscape. This will benefit the local environment by protecting its biodiversity and assist the local community to thrive and rebuild.

Humans of Kangaroo Island

The Humans of Kangaroo Island project has celebrated resilience after adversity. It has been shared through Instagram and Facebook storytelling.

Funds will aid the creation of a printed publication. It will record this period in time where things were tough, and people needed to be more resilient.

Sabrina Davis, the publisher and creative talent, is passionate about the project. ‘By now I have told close to 100 stories of local islanders and continue to do so to make an impact and keep our community connected. I aim to record the diversity of our island within these stories. We have many different upbringings, talents and cultural backgrounds to offer. This book will showcase our island’s identity, culture and history. It will discuss happy and tough times in our lives, as well as challenges such as the fires and pandemics. It can be enjoyed for generations to come’, says Sabrina.
