Bush Organics received a generator funded by the National Bushfire Appeal. It will aid in the rebuilding of owner Lara Tilbrook's Kangaroo Island business.
This little generator is also providing power at her off-the-grid home. Volunteers for a local community group are using her site as a base for an important community project.
Lara is a member of local community organisations Kangaroo Island Conservation Landowners Association (KICLA) and Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network (KIWLN). Members of KICLA and KIWLN are working together to support conservation on privately owned land. They are putting up nesting boxes for pygmy possums, birds and bats, and monitoring them.
Conservation on private land in western Kangaroo Island is now vitally important. The fires have devastated critical habitat and caused massive loss of wildlife.
Two-thirds of this area has been wiped out, including Flinders Chase and Western River National Parks.
Lara has been liaising with neighbours, adjoining properties and local community in the north west of the island. Access to their properties will help provide critical information, ensuring the appropriate on-ground management protocols are in place to protect endangered wildlife.
Landholders are working together to preserve, protect and restore the biodiversity on privately owned conservation bushland. They're ensuring water points and feed is available in accordance with expert guidelines.
