- Legacy Project #1
In 2019 we supported 100% Clean Bellarine and Barwon Heads Primary School. $70,000 of seed funding helped them transition to renewable energy. Watch the video for the full story!
So I've always had a real interest in the environment and in conservation. Fundamentally this journey towards getting us off fossil fuels is critically important and getting ourselves decarbonised is critically important so this whole idea of renewable energy, even though to me it's still technically confusing. It fascinates me to think how as a society can we move in a direction that we have to move in when people are like me. We're just ordinary, we don't know how to do it.
At Barwon Heads Primary School we were quite engaged with the environment, seeing as we live in a beautiful town where the environment and climate is absolutely amazing.
When us grade sixes last year went to see the movie 2040 we were really inspired especially by this small town in Bangladesh who had all of their energy connected by a solar grid and we thought wow wouldn't this just be amazing if we could have these panels not only on our school but on every building in Barwon Heads eventually.
At the same time that they watched that the Bendigo Bank legacy project advertised. Some of our student leaders really saw the opportunity to pitch their idea about solar at the school, connecting other elements of the community to the solar at the school. Through the Barwon Heads Community Bank we saw that Clean Bellarine had a solar idea as well so we just connected and pitched a plan together. That thankfully got the nod and now we're at the point where it can happen. It's been a long journey to get to this point but we're really proud of it and proud of the kids and the bank and Clean Bellarine for sparking it and coming together and working well together.
What it means to us though it means that the students can see their ideas take shape. Without the support of the bank that idea probably doesn't take shape. So you know for our students because of the bank's vision they get to actually create something that will be long lasting for our school.
Our future is in our kids hands they're just fantastic and that vision for the school and then beyond that the vision for connecting our community is still part of the legacy project even today. So we're still working with Bendigo Bank on you know what will come next beyond panels on the school, panels on community buildings. Some sort of virtual power plant like we've got that possibility here in this community. It's just going to be great.
