BlazeAid arrived in Braidwood on Friday 10 January 2020 and to say they brought hope to the community, and a much-needed smile onto our faces, is an understatement.
The camp is set up at the Braidwood Showground where there is a commercial kitchen, toilets, showers etc.
Before we knew it, there was a sea of over 40 caravans, camper trailers and tents belonging to volunteers who have come from all over ready to help.
As of Monday 3 February, there have been more than 170 volunteers (including locals) ranging in age from 13 to 81 years.
Some of these volunteers follow BlazeAid from district to district, not only seeing Australia and meeting new people but above all, wanting to help people and their communities.
The priority of the camp co-ordinators, Dennis and Carol McGrath, was to ensure they purchased supplies and food locally. They also try to include community/sporting groups where possible, and this has certainly happened.
The Braidwood CWA provide slices and cakes every week. The Braidwood Lions are on a roster for dinner, the Scouts help with washing the dishes, and the list goes on.
Dennis and Carol are unsure how long the Braidwood camp will go on for, although they have committed to at least three months.
One thing is certain, we are indeed fortunate to have this volunteer group looking after the community. BlazeAid not only rebuilds fencing and structures but it also rebuilds community spirit which is so important.
