Canungra State School Chaplin, Katie, has seen a significant increase in student and family needs since the fires in early 2020.
Families lost properties, had many evacuations and experienced school closures. All this has contributed to a significant rise in levels of anxiety, stress and mental health issues among students and families.
Throughout the year the need for chaplaincy support has grown significantly. The one day a week offered has become inadequate.
Over the next two years Queensland Bushfire Appeal will fund $47,400 to provide ongoing Chaplaincy services.
Chappy Katie will support the social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of the school's children, staff and families.
A message from Katie Campbell - Chaplain
"The combination of the destructive summer bushfires and COVID 19 has had a major impact on our community. Children and families are dealing with a lot; the rise in anxiety, financial stress and family breakdown. This funding has increased my ability to support our school children and families in need. I can increase the number of group programs designed to equip students and families with the tools needed. Teach them how to cope with challenges and promote good mental health and wellbeing.”
