Bendigo’s biggest and boldest building has caught the attention of the Victorian Premier, shortlisted in the Premier’s Design Awards for 2010. The Bendigo Centre was one of ten constructions shortlisted.

The awards highlight exemplar Victorian initiatives where design has been used effectively, sustainably and strategically to innovate.

Stella Thredgold, Executive Corporate Resources for Bendigo and Adelaide Bank said the bank is proud of its Five Star Green Star headquarters and hopes its new accommodation sets new standards in sustainable building in regional Australia and beyond.

“We hope the innovative green design encourages others to invest in environmentally-friendly office spaces, particularly in country areas where the impacts of climate change are being felt first.”

“By building a sustainable office space in Bendigo we have also invested in the local community and our people, creating an open and engaging working environment for more than 1000 employees.

“We are thrilled to be short-listed and hope it draws attention to what we have achieved and inspires other businesses to do the same,” she said.

Joint architects of the building were BVN Architecture and Gray Puksand.

Nik Tabain from Gray Puksand and Bill Dowzer from BVN said the building features retail stores and open public space.

They said the building had been “challenging but rewarding”.

“A long, narrow site in the middle of the city wasn’t the easiest space for us to work with – and sitting a 21st century building in a 19th century Victorian streetscape was another challenge.

“The bank was quite specific in its brief and wanted the building to meet very high environmental standards and provide for high interaction and engagement among staff.

“We are very pleased with the outcome and even more pleased to hear that the bank staff enjoy their new environment,” he said.

The Bendigo Centre has also won praise from;

  • World Architecture Award (Shortlisted nomination)
  • Victorian Institute of Architects (Regional Prize)
  • Victorian Institute of Architects (Commercial Architecture Award)
  • Property Council of Australia Innovation & Excellence Awards (High Commendation)
