Yarra Valley community offered free ‘green’ light bulbs

28 March 2008 |Media centre

Yarra Valley Community Bank® Branches will offer local residents the chance to have free energy-efficient light bulbs installed in their home, also free of charge.

During six weekends in April and May the community companies, in partnership with environmental services company Low Energy Supplies and Services (LESS), will offer residents the chance to have their incandescent light bulbs exchanged for energy-efficient ones.

The Ban the Bulb campaign is expected to reduce the greenhouse gases emitted by local residents by 50,000 tonnes as a result of exchanging 50,000 light bulbs. This is equivalent to taking 12,000 cars off the road for a year.

Mt Evelyn & Districts Community Bank® Chairman Allan Grundy said the campaign was a fantastic opportunity for local people to do their part for the environment.

“By installing approximately fifteen energy saving globes, a four-person household can save up to one tonne of greenhouse gas emissions annually, and save money on their energy bill as well,” Mr Grundy said.

“This program allows members of our community to make that change at absolutely no cost to them – we will even have the bulbs installed for them,” he said.

LESS Project Manager, Thea Bray congratulated Yarra Valley Community Bank on their support for the campaign.

“The campaign is probably one of the easiest ways for householders to help fight climate change, and we hope the Yarra community takes up the free offer to change their bulbs.”

Mr Grundy said the project would also be a great chance to raise funds for the local CFA brigades with members being paid for installing the light globes.

“Our Community Bank® branches are about more than banking and this green initiative is just one of the ways we are working to support the local community and environment,” he said.
