How to use AI in your Business

18 May 2026
Artificial intelligence, or AI, can feel like a big, complex topic, especially when you’re running a business. AI has endless capabilities, but it’s common to feel unsure where to start. Here’s a simple guide to getting started with AI in your small business, so you can start working smarter, not harder.

What actually is AI, and how does it relate to business?

Artificial intelligence is a type of computer technology that is designed to replicate the human brain. Used correctly, AI can perform tasks that typically require human thinking, like writing, organising or researching. For business owners, it can help to think of AI as a new member of your team. You can delegate tasks to your new AI team member just like you would a human.

What can AI do in my business?

There are two different types of AI, both offering different benefits to your business: generative AI and agentic AI.

Generative AI

Generative AI is effectively a creative assistant. It’s great at writing, summarising, brainstorming, and responding to questions you ask to dive deeper into a topic. If you’ve ever felt stuck staring at a blank page, generative AI can be a huge help.

You can use it for everyday tasks that take up valuable time. For example, you could ask it to:

  • Draft an email to a new client
  • Create social media captions that you can later edit
  • Brainstorm a list of blog post ideas
  • Note-taking during virtual or in-person meetings
  • Flesh out a new product idea you’ve been thinking about
  • Profile your ideal client or customer
  • Help you understand industry research and how it relates to your business
  • Help you explore a new product or offer idea

By handling these tasks, it frees you up to focus on the bigger picture of running your business.

Agentic AI

Agentic AI is more complex than generative AI, but it’s incredibly powerful. It can manage and complete multi-step tasks on your behalf and even think proactively without being prompted. Think of it as an assistant that doesn’t just produce work, but actively handles tasks from end to end.

You can use it for things like:

  • Booking appointments and managing your calendar
  • Connecting platforms and getting systems to speak to one another
  • Spotting trends in customer behaviour
  • Conducting detailed research on a new market
  • Managing workflows and project timelines

This type of AI helps streamline your operations, making sure nothing falls through the cracks.

How to take your first step with AI in your business

If you’re new to AI, the best advice is to start small. You don’t need to change your entire workflow overnight.

Try using a generative AI tool to map out your next newsletter, or using AI note-taking tools for your next meeting. Ask it to capture key points, assign responsibilities and outline next steps so everyone is on the same page. It’s a simple way to make follow-ups easier and more efficient.

The world of AI is full of possibilities. Start with a small step and see what it can do for you and your business.
