Youth Leadership Camp 2018

This year’s 2018 Bendigo Bank Youth Leadership Camp was held in early October. The annual event is an opportunity for young people from across the Mornington Peninsula region to attend a three-day residential camp with their peers to develop confidence and leadership skills, social awareness and community connections.

The camp is an initiative of the Mornington Peninsula region’s Community Bank® branches and the Mornington Peninsula Shire. It is fully-funded and the program of activities is designed by the shire’s Youth Services team and Portsea Camp staff.

This year, 30 students from the region’s secondary colleges were invited to attend the camp. The selection process favours students who demonstrate leadership potential but would otherwise unable to attend such a program for reasons such as financial barriers, social exclusion/isolation, family conflict/dysfunction or health challenges.

Activities and workshops for the students included:
*confidence-building and public speaking
*building resilience and managing stress and wellbeing
*working as a team and supporting your peers
*creating and developing a community project
*inspirational guest speakers
*getting to know some community mentors.

Staff and Directors from the region’s Community Bank® branches attend the camp for dinner one evening, with the aim to build relationships and mentoring roles with their local students.

As a result of the students’ workshops about mental health concerns among their peers, the students are planning a community project to roll-out in their respective schools in 2019. The project will help raise funds and awareness for a youth mental health support initiative.

It is very rewarding for the Community Bank® branches who contributed funds to this camp, to see such an impressive group of young leaders rolling their sleeves up to help each other and their wider school communities. We are very proud to support them.

Our congratulations go to the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Youth Services team for helping us to plan and deliver this important regional youth initiative.
