In January 2001, a group of community leaders met with Bendigo Bank to voice their disappointment with the current banking situation in Tuggeranong Valley, after existing banks closed all around the satellite city.
In April of 2002 the decision to proceed with two Community Bank® branches, one in Calwell and one in Wanniassa, was made. The public share off only took two months to raise the $900,000 needed to open the two branches.
On 09 December 2002, the first Community Bank® in Canberra was opened at Calwell Shops, with the Wanniassa Branch opening a week later.
The first community contribution came only months later, when a $1,000 was given to the Lions Youth Haven in Kambah. This money went towards helping them rebuild after the Canberra Bushfires in January 2003.
These branches have been continued to operate for well over a decade now, and have provided grants and sponsorships to great organisations, such as:
- George Gregan Foundation
- Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter Service
- Project Independence
- Calwell Early Childhood Centre
Together with the Curtin, Jerrabomberra and Wanniassa Community Bank® Branches, the Calwell Branch has helped raise over $1.2 million for clubs, groups and organisations around the region.
This will continue for many years to come.
