A perfect day to learn about the weather
Dark grey clouds rolled in and the wind picked up as Mansfield & District Community Bank® branch team set up outside for our “Understanding The Weather” event. Meteorologist, Jane Bunn, was on her way as we hurried to peg down the marquees, weight the banners and willed it to stay dry.
The first question to Jane, “Is it going to rain? We were planning on having the afternoon tea outside…”
“Very high chance of rain and thunderstorms between 2pm & 3pm… Yes. Good idea to have the afternoon tea inside”, replied Jane.
Sure enough, as Jane started to explain the difference between rain and showers, the showers came down. The sound on the Pavilion tin roof at the showgrounds created quite the atmosphere. The rain did not steal Jane’s thunder. We were fortunate to have Rolf and his team from Mansfield Sound & Lighting on hand, or else no one would have heard Jane’s forecast for the remainder of 2017. Those attending also learnt the impact that the Pacific Ocean (El Nino/ La Nina), and Indian Ocean (Indian Ocean Dipole) have on our weather, and what the difference between ‘mostly sunny’ and ‘partly cloudy’ was.
Following the weather insights and humorous stories of life as a meteorologist, Jane was kind enough to draw the winners of our two prizes for the day. Jennie Baker took home the lucky door prize of a Wireless Weather Station and Peter Finney won the Rural Bank sponsored Samsung Galaxy tablet.
The afternoon concluded with a delicious array of cakes, sandwiches and other treats, thanks to the Mansfield CWA ladies.
Mansfield & District Community Bank® branch and Rural Bank were pleased to host this free event for the community. We'd like to thank Jane Bunn for bringing her knowledge and enthusiasm about the weather to Mansfield. We hope that everyone who attended enjoyed the afternoon.
