About us

Community Bank Canberra Deakin, Community Bank Canberra Belconnen, Community Bank Cooma, Community Bank Batemans Bay, Community Bank Canberra Tuggeranong, Community Bank Newcastle, Community Bank Canberra Calwell and Community Bank Canberra Curtin are operated by SERVICE ONE Financial Services PTY LTD, a wholly owned subsidiary of SERVICE ONE Mutual Ltd.

Our origins go back more than 50 years, we were born as a community credit union and through the years, have gone through a number of developments and changes to get to where we are today.

History

On the 1 March 1971, 25 people held a meeting at the Coach House Motor Inn (now known as the Alpine Hotel) and the Cooma Monaro Credit Union was formed. As the region grew so did we, eventually re-branding as Snowy Mountains Credit Union servicing the areas of Cooma, Queanbeyan, Tumut and Temora.

The first office at 84 Sharp Street Cooma and was opened on 10 April 1972. Membership throughout the 1980s and 90s expanded with the opening of branches in Tumut, Queanbeyan and Temora.

On 1 April 2004, the Bemboka Community Credit Union merged with Service One Credit Union and became part of Snowy Mountains Credit Union. This merger meant that a rural community was able to maintain a financial services outlet they have enjoyed since 1959 when it otherwise might have closed.

SERVICE ONE Members Banking was created as a result of the merger of three formerly separate credit unions - The Credit Union of Canberra, Snowy Mountains Credit Union and Hospitals Credit Union. The three came together in May 2001 to form divisions of Service One Credit Union Limited. The three divisions continued to operate under separate names until December 2006 when they united under the name SERVICE ONE Members Banking.

With the aim of supporting Members and their communities in a financially sustainable way, in March 2015, SERVICE ONE Mutual Limited joined forces with a number of forward-thinking mutual organisations and formed a strategic alliance with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. Known as Alliance Bank, the relationship allowed us to become a catalyst for positive change in our communities.

In December 2022 SERVICE ONE Mutual Limited acquired NOVA Mutual Limited in Newcastle.

SERVICE ONE Mutual then set-up a subsidiary, SERVICE ONE Financial Services Pty Limited that entered into an agreement with Bendigo Bank for all branches: Deakin, Belconnen, Cooma, Batemans Bay, Tumut, Tuggeranong and Newcastle to become part of the Community Bank network.

As part of our ongoing growth the subsidiary then acquired the franchise rights for the Community Bank branches operating in Curtin and Calwell on 1 July 2023.

As the world of financial services continues to evolve so do we ensuring all of our Members continue to enjoy the best banking products and services now and into the future.

SERVICE ONE Mutual Limited remains focused on providing support to our Members and their communities through a range of social impact investments and charitable work.

Our depositors are protected under the Australian Government’s Financial Claims Scheme (FCS) which provides protection and quick access to deposits made with a bank, building society or credit union in the unlikely event that one of these institutions fails. Find out more here.
