Bendigo Bank Victorian Bushfire Appeal surpasses $600,000

Since the appeal was launched by the Bank’s charitable arm, the Community Enterprise Foundation on 12 January, funds have already helped deliver immediate relief to fire-affected residents and communities including:

• $20,000 for Castlemaine Community House to support impacted individuals and families
• $20,000 to support the Blazeaid Camp for Longwood and surrounds
• $25,000 for the Harcourt Valley Heritage and Tourist Centre to construct a permanent stage in James Park to provide a focal place for the community to come together after the fire.
• $22,000 to support the employment of a relief coordinator for three months to design, implement and support a recovery program for people impacted by the bushfires.

Bendigo Bank CEO, Richard Fennell, said while these early interventions delivered important support to those impacted, the majority of the funds raised would be directed toward medium and long-term recovery initiatives.

“We know from experience the impact of bushfires lingers long after the flames are extinguished,” Mr Fennell said.

“The emotional, financial, and environmental effects can last for years. Medium and long-term recovery funding will focus on helping communities rebuild, supporting mental health and wellbeing, and working with local communities on what they need to recover.”

Mr Fennell thanked everyone who had donated so far, calling out the Bendigo Bank Community Banks in Victoria, in particular.

“The Appeal’s success reflects the generosity of many donors, in particular, our Community Banks in Victoria, which have contributed over half of the donations received so far, furthering the ongoing support to their communities which has seen more than $400 million returned since its inception.”

“This response sends a powerful message to fire-affected communities: you are not alone and our support will continue,” Mr Fennell concluded.

People wishing to support these communities are encouraged to provide monetary donations directly to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal as monetary donations are quicker, more effective, and logistically provide far more flexibility than donations of material items or pre-loved goods. Donations can be made at any time online or at your local Bendigo Bank branch. All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
