Counselling services hit the road

17 November 2022

The South East Qld and Northern NSW Flood Disaster Appeal has provided a $30,000 grant to DAISI. They're addressing the immediate needs of those dealing with the traumatic experience of the floods.

DAISI Services Limited is an award-winning community-based charity. They provide independent information, support and services to a diverse range of people. DAISI works with people experiencing disadvantage. In particular people with disabilities, those who are ageing, their families and carers.

The funding has supported DAISI's costs of providing trauma counselling sessions. They've also leveraged funding from other philanthropic organisations to buy a van to use as a mobile office.

Many people had homes and livelihoods destroyed by the flooding. The mobile service is now reaching those experiencing trauma and decreasing mental health. Through DAISI, people are able to gain strategies, support, and coping mechanisms to move forward. As a result they can get back on their feet and continue contributing to community-life.

“It is so amazing for us to be able to provide counselling support. The team regularly goes to Wollongbar Sports Fields, near Lismore and Pottsville North. They visit the accommodation parks where people have been provided with temporary housing. The counselling services are also offered in the township of Wardell. There many farmers and locals have been deeply affected by the floods. We're providing regular appointments and catch-ups. These help people work through their traumatic experiences.” - Joanne Mclean, Chief Executive Officer of DAISI.
