The Stable Relief Trauma Project

19 August 2022

The Stable Relief Trauma Project is an equine therapy program that helps those affected by natural disaster. They are a not-for-profit organisation that operate in both regional and rural communities.

We were able to provide more than $200,000 to support the life changing work they do. Funds provided thanks to the generous donations to the Bushfire Appeal, and in partnership with Rotary Clubs of Australia Bushfire Disaster Appeal.

The equine assisted somatic therapy is an approved method of trauma-informed practice. Participants are guided to learn effective response management mechanisms and build new capabilities for self-regulation. It restores a sense of wellbeing and empowerment.

The program is being used to great affect in the South Coast region communities of Southern NSW and in Mallacoota in Victoria. The horses are providing invaluable assistance to those most seriously affected by PTSD.

Here is some feedback from the therapy participants:

“…I love the fact that even though I felt anxious the horses have helped me knowing that they trusted me.”

“…..I’ve enjoyed learning……I still have a long way to go. I’m looking forward to more future equine therapy sessions….. This works and is amazing and needs to keep happening, amazing therapy.”

“Keeps me back on track and moving forward, I easily fall back into old habits so need constant help to move forward.”

“Relief at not having to go over my story again, the retelling of events is like reciting a story I’ve learnt and at the end of it still feel like I’m drowning in it.”

”Amazing experience, in a safe and nurturing environment. So much more affective and less painful and time consuming when compared to ‘regular’ counselling or therapy.”
